Bayer MaterialScience to acquire Ure-Tech Group

Bayer MaterialScience has announced that it will acquire Taiwan’s Ure-Tech Group, one of the largest TPU producers in the Asia Pacific region. With this acquisition BMS will become according to its own words the worldwide largest supplier and solutions provider of TPU resins and films. The deal is subject to regulatory approval by the cartel office and is expected to be closed in the first quarter of 2007. Both parties have agreed not to disclose purchase price and other related details of the acquisition. In 2005, approximately 180 employees of the Ure-Tech Group generated sales of around USD 55 million. Sales of Bayer MaterialScience’s Business Unit Thermoplastic Polyurethanes amounted to EUR 192 million last year with roughly 450 employees. Together with Ure-Tech’s production facili

Huntsman to sell European Commodities business to Sabic

Huntsman Corporation has announced that it has signed a definitive agreement with Saudi Basic Industries Corporation, under which Sabic will acquire Huntsman’s European Base Chemicals and Polymers business. Under the agreement, Sabic will acquire the business for a purchase price of USD 700 million in cash, subject to certain adjustments at closing. The transaction further allows Huntsman to reduce its UK pension liabilities in the amount of approximately USD 126 million. The transaction will not include Huntsman’s Teesside-based Pigments division or the Wilton-based aniline and nitrobenzene operations of its Polyurethanes division.

New functional polyurethane filtering foams

Cellular polyurethane foams are well known and established as high performance filter materials. The reasons for this are the complete open cell structure and the well defined cell dimensions. These two parameters, combined with the huge inner surface of polyurethane foams, guarantee reproducible filtering and a high load capacity without significant pressure drop. The polyurethane matrix acts as the static medium through which the polluted liquid passes. A team of researchers at the companies Recticel nv, Wetteren, Belgium, and Elastogran GmbH, Lemförde, Germany, have now succeeded in further improving the filtering properties of polyurethane foams. The concept of this improvement is to functionalise the inert polyurethane matrix. Beside the pure particle filtration, the new chemical m

Explosion at Baytown TDI Plant

The explosion occurred on Tuesday 26th at approximately 11:30 am CT in a process vessel in one of the two TDI units. Bayer implemented its emergency response plan, and outside emergency responders were called to the scene. 21 workers were affected by the explosion and immediately taken to hospital but all released same day. Due to Bayer Spokeswoman Cherie Laughlin four of the 21 people treated were Bayer employees, while the others were contract employees of Brock Services, Jacobs and CB&I. Bayer is assembling an international team of experts to investigate the cause of the accident. Laughlin would not speculate on how long the investigation might take. The plant will resume normal operations today, with the exception of the TDI unit that exploded. The other TD

Air driven two component metering unit

From the Italian supplier of PU equipment Futura-Tech srl, Porto Sant’ Elpidio, comes AP 20-150, a new air powered mobile two component metering unit which is especially suited for low output spraying of polyureas and PU coatings and foams. It is designed for in-plant and laboratory use. Its maximum output is 4,5 l/min, and it is equipped with double acting piston pumps, having a fix ratio. The machine has two separate heaters for isocyanate and polyol that are working on diatermic oil to ensure constant heating. Heaters temperature can be read during operation in an display. As options there are a transfer pump, mixer and flexible heaters for drums available.

New mix head for structural parts

German PU equipment manufacturer Krauss-Maffei Kunststofftechnik GmbH, Munich, has introduced Luchs II, a new mix head which is said to offer several striking advantages compared with other manufacturing techniques. The PU mix is sprayed by a flat-fan nozzle without air infusion. The result is uniform material distribution, minimal overspray and a defined spray edge. The mix head is available in two sizes, which together cover the output range 20 to 150 g/s. The width of the spray pattern is determined by the distance between the mix head and the target, and by the choice of spray nozzle. Spray cone widths up to 1000 mm are possible, so that even large parts can be rapidly coated with a PU layer. Immediately after each spray cycle, air-cleaning removes PU residues from the mix head.

Fresh air for babies

BASF’s Elastollan TPU is used to produce interconnected, open cells for the cushioning core of Stimulite honeycomb baby mattresses made by the Californian company Supracor, San José. These ventilated mattresses are said to prevent heat build-up and allow babies to breath more freely, which may help to eliminate these primary risk factors for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Elastollan was selected for this application because it is flexible, durable, washable, efficient to process, and resistant to puncture, tear and abrasion. The product also features antibacterial, antifungal and allergen-free properties. The Stimulite baby mattress features thousands of tiny perforations in the honeycomb cells made from Elastollan TPU film that circulate air both vertically and horizontally to pr

Wide double belt for light-weight furniture boards and prefabricated houses

Siempelkamp Handling Systeme (SHS) GmbH, Wolfratshausen, Germany, has just finished the development of a new generation of double belt plants with a slat width between 80 cm and 2,8 m and a double belt length of up to 50 m. The first double belt plant for a product width of 2,2 m for a large Austrian manufacturer of wood-based boards and furniture boards was manufactured in July 2006. The specially designed plant allows to bond two thin MDF boards with a honeycomb core and a polyurethane glue. The light construction boards are used in the furniture industry for a new generation of lightweight designer furniture in maximum sizes of 2,2 m width, 5,6 m length and up to 100 mm thickness. The boards can also be used for other applications such as high-strength partition walls. The framel
