Explosion in TDI factory kills five peopleFive people were killed in a chemical factory explosion in the north of PR China, state media agency Xinhua reported. The blast at Canzhou Dahua TDI, a producer of chemicals used in the manufacturing of polyurethane, occurred already on friday afternoon in Hebei Province. "The blast in the nitration workshop section led to a fire," a Cangzhou city spokeswoman said. More than 100 people were injured, fourteen seriously, many of them suffering burns, the report said. The accident prompted authorities to move more than 2000 residents in a nearby village in case of a toxic leak. According to information from Asian polyurethane industry members the plant was designed for a capacity of 35,000 jato TDI. Estimated 10 % of the Chinese TDI capacity is said to be affected by the blast. |

Cost effective slabstock productionHennecke GmbH, Sankt Augustin, Germany, will introduce at the forthcoming Interzum 2007 in Cologne its new MultiFlex Basic slabstock line. The machine concept comprises three types: 1. the trough system 2. the liquid-laydown design 3. a combination of trough and liquid-laydown plant. The new plant design is described to make it easy for customers to enter high-pressure technology. Changing over or starting to use high-pressure technology pays off. Recticel expands flex foam operations to FinlandRecticel has signed an agreement to acquire the polyurethane foam and wadding products business from Finlayson & Co of Finland. The acquired companies, Espe Oy and Ewona Oy, have achieved combined annual sales of EUR 24,9 million in 2006 and employ about 151 employees in Finland and Estonia. Espe Oy operates a foaming and converting unit in Kouvola (Finland) mainly for the upholstery-furniture and mattress industry. Espe Esti Oü, Espe Oy’s Estonian subsidiary operates a foam converting unit in Tallinn. Ewona Oy manufactures wadding products (thermally bonded fibre products for the bedding, furniture and construction industry) in Kankaanpää (Finland). MDI plant shutdown in StadeDow Polyurethanes began work on a scheduled five-week turnaround at its MDI production facility in Stade, Germany, for routine maintenance and a government mandated process equipment inspection. Dow announces North American MDI & TDI price increasesEffective June 1, 2007, Dow will increase its price for all Pure and Polymeric methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) by $0.05/pound. This price adjustment applies to all polyurethane market segments and end-use applications in the United States and Canada. Dow will also be implementing its previously announced price increase of $0.10/pound for toluene diisocyanate (TDI) on June 1, 2007. This increase was previously planned to go into effect on May 1, 2007. |

Ciech invests in ZachemThe Polish concern Ciech plans to invest about a half billion PLN in the development of its Zachem subsidiary. The firm, headquartered in Bydgoszcz, which produces among other products TDI, should be turned into an important player in the European plastics supplies market within 5 years. This was reported in the Polish daily press. The aged finishing plants for the production of PU soft foam and semi-finished products should first be modernised to produce epoxy resins and coatings. Basonat IT is used as ingredient for exceptionally hard and fast-drying PU coatings with very good light- and weather-fastness and chemicals resistance.
