Inauguration of world’s largest ethane cracker in Ras Laffan, Qatar

Total recently inaugurated the world’s largest olefin cracker based on ethane in Ras Laffan, Qatar. With a production capacity of 1.3 million t of ethylene per year, the Ras Laffan Olefin Cracker (RLOC) will feed the new Qatofin polyethylene plant inaugurated in Mesaieed last November. Total Petrochemicals, through its participations in Qapco and Qatofin, joint ventures with Qatar Petroleum, holds 22.2% of RLOC. The other partners are Qatar Petroleum and Chevron Phillips Chemical Company.

BorsodChem lenders approve financial restructuring

Hungarian isocyanate producer BorsodChem Zrt. announced that the company’s Senior and Mezzanine Lenders have approved the consensual financial restructuring scheme of BorsodChem, which was agreed upon by First Chemical (Luxembourg) S.àr.l (FCL), a company controlled by the Permira Funds and VCP Capital Partners, and Wanhua Industrial Group (Wanhua), a strategic investor in February this year.

USA set to approve formaldehyde standards

Dow and BASF receive Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award

Dow Chemical and BASF received a 2010 Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award at a ceremony held at the Ronald Reagan Center in Washington, D.C. The two companies were honoured for their jointly developed hydrogen peroxide to propylene oxide (HPPO) technology that vastly improves the production process of a key chemical intermediate, propylene oxide. Propylene oxide from the HPPO process can be used in a variety of applications from home insulation, appliances, automobiles and furniture to aircraft de-icers, paints, brake fluids and pharmaceuticals.

Albemarle builds kilo laboratory in Europe

Albemarle Corporation is building a state of the art kilo lab in Louvain la Neuve, Belgium. The facility will give Albemarle's European customer base convenient access to local product development capabilities to better serve their needs. The facility is expected to be operational by the third quarter of 2010.
