PU rigid foam insulated building blocks

Because of rising energy costs, the building materials industry is focusing increasingly on heat conductivity - the lower this value, the better the insulation will be. In a solid construction, a typical insulated external wall consists of either a double wall structure with a core insulation, or a single wall with additional external insulation. Both of these alternatives are costly and have a relatively long construction period.

KraussMaffei Berstorff is now offering complete systems for continuous production of PU-insulated pipes. The extruded plastic pipe is given an insulating polyurethane layer, followed immediately by the addition of a protective polyethylene sheath.

PU formula for large, high-strength, lightweight products

Among many other products, KraussMaffei’s customer Camoplast Inc. makes plastic hulls and decks for personal watercraft (PWC), more commonly known as jet skis. A leading PWC producer tasked its supplier Camoplast with developing a lighter hull capable of boosting PWC speed and performance, as well as saving manufacturing costs. The challenge was to achieve the weight reduction without loss of strength. Camoplast found the solution by combining KraussMaffei’s LFI process with a new formula for Baydur 814, a polyurethane system from Bayer MaterialScience (BMS). The PWC hull measuring 360 x 90 cm is the first application of this special technology.

25th IKV Colloquium: Session on processing of PU

Sixty years of the IKV and 25 Colloquia: the Institute of Plastics Processing (IKV) is holding its Jubilee Colloquium on 3 – 4 March 2010 in the Eurogress, Aachen, Germany. Under the motto "Plastics Technology – Looking Ahead" the IKV will be giving an overview of the latest research results in the fields of plastics and rubber technology. The research topics covered at the IKV take in the fields of injection moulding, extrusion, rubber technology, moulded part design and materials technology, fibre-reinforced plastics and PU. The PU processing topics at IKV are treated in an inter-disciplinary way.
