Hyperlast introduces low-viscous food contact plasticiserDioplex PFC2 is an ultra-low viscosity polymeric plasticiser from Hyperlast, which is said to open up new opportunities for plasticisers in food contact approved applications due to its extremely low viscosity. Although compliant with European Food Contact legislation, especially Directive 2002/72/EC and its subsequent amendments the use of polyester polyols in food contact plastisol applications has often been excluded due to their higher viscosity. With lower extraction rates for enclosures set by recent European legislation, Hyperlast’s new product can assist any processors searching for food contact approved plasticisers with acceptable extraction data. Dioplex PFC2 can be applied by itself or in combination with other food contact plasticisers and can be supplied in drums, IBCs or |

New two-component mix-dispense valveThe US-company Sealant Equipment & Engineering, Inc., Plymouth, MI, has introduced a new model 2200-545-037 two-component miniature mix-dispense valve which precisely dispenses miniature beads and very small volumes of low-viscosity pourable materials and abrasive or filled materials. The valve is described as being ideal for low-flow applications typically found in miniature potting, doming, filling and bonding operations. The valve uses the company’s so-called No-Drip technology for dispensing solvent-based, moisture-curing and stringy materials such as epoxies, silicones and polyurethanes in difficult product-assembly applications. The pneumatically actuated valve opens and closes its carbide resin- and catalyst-material passages at the mixer entrance to precisely start and stop mat |

Pump monitoringLewa GmbH, Leonberg, Germany, has introduced a new technology which makes it possible to detect phenomens of wear at pumps at an early stage. The Lewa CMS monitors the function of the components and parameters that are critical to the correct operation of reciprocating diaphragm pump heads. Impact sound sensors recognise leakage of the suction and discharge valves and report leaks as low as 1 % of full flow making early warning of potential failure a real possibility. Due to the combined evaluation of impact sound and pressure signals 90 % of possible failures are monitored. With Lewa’s pump monitoring system it is possible to carry out condition oriented repair and maintenance of diaphragm pumps. Shut-downs can be scheduled and thus the plant availability can be increased. Failures ca |

New plastic rotomoulding technologyPersico SpA, Nembro, Italy, has introduced a new technology to manufacture a multiple-layer rotationally moulded products. This new system utilizes Persico’s Leonardo machine, a fully automated rotational moulding system. It allows products to be made with layers of material, each providing different properties and benefits. For example, the outer layer could provide a high level of UV and impact resistance, the centre layer might be insulating PU foam. The Leonardo machine fully automates the injection of additional resins and blowing agents during the moulding cycle. The precise heating of the mould allows the moulder a high level of control of the wall thickness of each layer. A product can now be designed and manufactured with specific areas of increased wall thickness for additiona |

Disposable air assisted spray for two-component coatingsFor low-pressure spray applications, TAH Industries, Inc based in Robbinsville, NJ, USA, offers a low-cost plastic spray manifold. This disposable assembly can be used with conventional meter/mix equipment. Common applications include truck bed liners, concrete coating and tank repair. The reactive coating is mixed within a special static mixer. At the mixer outlet, air is introduced which atomises the liquid stream. This is effective for high viscosity liquids and abrasive suspensions. Since the reactive coating is contained completely within the disposable static mixer, clean up time is minimal. For meter/mix applications, TAH offers the 550 Autogun with air-assisted assembly. Quick connect fittings on the air manifold allow rapid mixer changeover. The spray fitting consists of an air |

4x4s protected from wear and corrosionThe Newport-based British garage, Dawn & Dusk Ltd, uses Hyperkote EMH85A, a new sprayable PU elastomer by Hyperlast Ltd, Birch Vale, High Peak, Derbyshire, UK, to provide added protection against corrosion on its customers’ 4x4 and commercial vehicles. Application of the elastomer is described as relatively simple, with use of low-pressure dual component dispensing equipment. Dawn & Dusk applies it for coatings on truck beds and other vehicles to protect against cracks, chips, scuffs and corrosion. An added benefit is the reduction of noise during transit . It also can provide an anti-slip finish, which will, in practical terms, stop objects such as toolboxes rattling around when carried in the back of a coated vehicle. Dawn & Dusk is currently evaluating further applications where ther |

New mould release for RIM applicationsAxel Plastics Research Laboratories Inc., Woodside, NY, USA, announces the introduction of a new mould release - Xtend 875 - that provides, according to the company, significant labour and material savings in RIM moulding applications, by improving the ease of mould release at the same time reducing mould wax build-up. Axel cites a case study from a customer that demonstrates the effectiveness of the new product for automotive applications. Case study A major manufacturer of automotive parts employs a RIM process to produce bumpers and door fascias for high performance sports vehicles. Two urethane resin systems are used to address the different modulus and appearance demands of each part; both resins are filled with mica, one system at 13 %, the other at 20 %. Processing occurs at 65 |

Flame retardants for PUAt the JEC in Paris, France, the Pigments & Additives Division of Clariant, Muttenz, Switzerland, focused on its flame retardant systems Exolit. These non-halogenated products based on various phosphorous compounds offer, according to Clariant, an excellent alternative to conventional flame retardants. All Exolit products meet the current requirements for environmentally compatible and highly efficient fire protection. The benefits of the flame retardants are low smoke density and almost no corrosive gases in case of a fire. The reactive products of the Exolit OP range are suitable for polyurethanes, for which liquid flame retardants with low viscosity are a preferred choice. As it releases extremely few emissions, this product is especially interesting for manufacturers of flexible fo |

GE strengthens its impact test capabilitiesWith the installation of a new Pedestrian Impact Test System in its Moka Technology Center, in Tochigi, Japan, GE Advanced Materials will help automotive manufacturers and suppliers validate new material technologies for front-end safety systems to help better meet new regulatory obligations around pedestrian safety. GE expects its upgraded test capabilities to help accelerate the development of thermoplastic energy absorber systems, particularly in vehicle components such as bumper beams, fenders, hoods, grilles, garnishes, and wiper systems. The center now can test vehicle pedestrian head and leg impacts, in addition to performing pendulum tests; barrier tests for both the Economic Commission for Europe (ECE) and Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) regulations; and pole and an |
