Mitsubishi Chemical launched biomass-based polycarbonatediols with higher biomass content

In October, the Mitsubishi Chemical Group (the MCG Group) launched grades of BENEBiOL™, a biomass-based polycarbonatediol, with higher biomass content. The compoany will be exhibiting these grades in a panel display at the 4th Sustainable Material Expo to be held at Makuhari Messe from October 29 to 31, 2024.

Developed by MCG, BENEBiOL is the world’s first biomass-based polycarbonatediol of its kind, and is mainly used as a primary raw material for polyurethane resins. Compared to conventional petroleum-derived products, the use of biomass components allows manufacturers to impart polyurethane resins with superior functions, including flexibility without sacrificing chemical resistance, stain resistance, and a distinctive tactile feel. These resins are used in paints and coatings for automotives, furniture, and outdoor products, as well as in synthetic and artificial leather.

The biobased content of existing grades of BENEBiOL was mainly 20-50%, but the new HSS and NLDS grades have achieved a biobased content of over 80%. In addition, some of our previous petroleum-derived grades have been converted to biomass (NLS grades), enabling us to offer bio-grades for all BENEBiOL products. The shift to biomass-based raw materials while maintaining high-quality functions will contribute to our customers' efforts to achieve sustainable manufacturing.

Through the development of BENEBiOL, the MCG Group is committed to continuing to provide high value-added products and contribute to the realization of sustainable societies.
