Dr. Gundolf Jacobs, owner of PCG Polyurethane Consultancy GmbH, is looking back at 12 years of self-employment - and now keen to find a PUR specialist who is interested in doing consultancy-work
How did it start?
After working for more than 25 years with a top PUR raw material supplier as application chemist in different roles, responsibilities and application areas, I became a candidate to be complimented to an internal position.
However, I preferred the daily technical challenges, the diverse customer requests, the “competition” between solid scientific work on one side and quick and dirty activities and decisions on the other.
Consequently, I exited out, founded my own company and continued the type of work I enjoyed doing.
Is there a demand for technical Consultancy?
Yes! Since I started in the PUR industry in 1986, the raw material suppliers reduced their technical staff regularly – and it did not end in 2012 with me.
The biggest companies, the ones with strong purchasing power, do still receive a good and wide-ranging Tech-Service from their suppliers. Small companies or more diversified companies can benefit from an outside expert.
Name a few catchphrases of what you are offering?
What are your consultancy highlights
I modified and transferred a scientific-lab experiment into a pre-industrial process for a medical product that is now in clinical testing.
I reduced scrap-rate and increased productivity for PUR parts production processes.
I analyzed and evaluated technical due diligence data supporting investment companies’ decision-making.
What keeps you going?
Client’s feedback. I often joke: 2 years of feedback during consultancy years amounts higher than 20 years of feedback for company work.
Satisfaction when personal experience, know-how and guidance leads to solving problems and education of younger personnel.
What about retirement from consultancy?
Actually, I started to look for a “successor”. I am keen to find a PUR specialist who is interested in doing consultancy-work. Instead of starting from scratch, e.g. founding a new company and making it well known in the market, he/she could start from an elevated position. And even without any financial risk: He/she could initially work for PCG and after x months, an internal “friendly take-over” could occur. PCG is available for a new owner.
To this end, I postponed the overhaul of PCG’s homepage. I simply scratched the previous one to avoid non-compliance with the GDPR (EU 2016/679) requirements.
Perhaps this article can inspire seasoned technical personnel to think about the option of doing consultancy. I would be available to answer questions and provide support.
