Chinese battery tech company seeks Covestro co-operation

Blue Ocean Blackstone, which specializes in lithium-ion battery cathode and anode adhesives, has collaborated with Covestro to address a key challenge in silicon-carbon anode material applications.

On January 5, 2026, a delegation from Fujian Blue Ocean Blackstone New Materials Technology. visited Covestro, to discuss potential collaboration. They engaged in detailed discussions on key areas including joint development of polyurethane adhesives for silicon-carbon anodes, suitable cooperation models and future promotion plans. The meeting resulted in several mutually beneficial agreements, according to a report in Chinese news source PUWorld.

Blue Ocean Blackstone, which specializes in lithium-ion battery cathode and anode adhesives, has collaborated with Covestro to address a key challenge in silicon-carbon anode material applications. These anodes, boasting ultra-high theoretical capacity, are a key focus for enhancing lithium-ion battery energy density. However, their volume expansion during charging and discharging imposes strict demands on the adhesive’s toughness and stability.

Leveraging Covestro's technological expertise and global resources in polyurethane materials, combined with Blue Ocean Blackstone's deep experience in the application of battery adhesives in various scenarios, the two companies will jointly overcome technical challenges and create innovative products with superior performance.

This visit established a strong foundation for future cooperation. The companies will now move forward with their planned technology collaboration and product development to enhance the performance of new energy batteries and capitalise on the rapid growth in the global silicon-based anode binder market. In the future, both parties will prioritise technological innovation and deepen their supply chain collaboration to offer superior material solutions for new energy vehicles, energy storage and other sectors.
