Nissan introduces durable artificial leather that fools the fingertips

Unique PU-based artificial leather provides upscale comfort and feel with greater wrinkle resistance.

Car maker Nissan has introduced a new seating concept called TailorFit, developed to deliver a premium look and tactile experience similar to leather while integrating sustainable and performance-oriented materials. Unveiled in the company’s latest design releases, TailorFit seating represents a materials-led approach to interior comfort that could influence future applications of engineered polymers and elastomers in automotive upholstery.

According to Nissan, the TailorFit system combines advanced foams, textile coverings and surface finishes to achieve a high-end aesthetic and comfort profile. The seating material is crafted to resemble leather in appearance and hand feel while providing the durability, breathability and temperature control expected in modern vehicles. Nissan designers emphasised that the solution responds to shifting consumer preferences toward alternatives to traditional hide leather without compromising quality.

Nissan highlighted that the surface and foam layers incorporate engineered elastic materials, precision foam contouring and advanced upholstery techniques that enhance passenger comfort. This aligns with industry trends that see thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPUs), coated textiles and specialty elastomers increasingly used in automotive seating to balance softness, abrasion resistance, weatherability and ease of maintenance.

Nissan’s TailorFit seating is positioned as part of the company’s broader commitment to combining design, comfort and sustainability. By developing materials and assembly methods that mimic leather’s desirable attributes, the automaker aims to increase consumer appeal while reducing reliance on animal-based materials and enabling new forms of interior customisation.

"In an internal clinic, Nissan employees tested seats covered in leather, PVC, polyurethane and TailorFit. Although employees did not know which seats had TailorFit, the majority reported that they preferred the haptics of the TailorFit seats," said Fernando Sarabia, senior manager of Seat Engineering at Nissan Technical Center North America

One of the reasons TailorFit feels so soft is that the distance between the grains on the surface is similar to the distance between the grooves in fingerprints.

"This provides a smoother feel. It used to be easy for me to tell the difference between synthetic and genuine leather. Now, it's very difficult," said Sarabia, who has worked in automotive seating for 22 years.

TailorFit has debuted on the new-for-2026 Nissan Sentra SL and six other models in the Nissan and Infiniti ranges for North America.
