The US's Polyisocyanurate Insulation Manufacturers Association (PIMA) has published updated, industry-averaged Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for polyisocyanurate (polyiso) insulation, providing new verified data on the material’s environmental performance across its lifecycle.
The third-party verified EPDs cover polyiso roof insulation, wall insulation and high-density (HD) roof cover boards, and are based on standardised life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology. The documents are intended to support architects, specifiers and building professionals seeking independently verified environmental data for construction materials.
According to PIMA, the updated EPDs incorporate primary manufacturing data from 2023 and reflect a 75-year building service life, including roof replacement cycles and scaling factors for different insulation thicknesses.
“This was a significant undertaking for our industry,” said Marcin Pazera, senior director of technical affairs at PIMA. “Over a two-year period, manufacturers and LCA practitioners worked together to collect, validate and analyse data from facilities across North America. The result is a robust and transparent dataset that reflects the environmental performance of polyiso insulation products.”
PIMA said the EPDs are designed to help meet increasing demand for transparent environmental data and to support compliance with green building frameworks such as LEED and other LCA-based certification systems.
“As building codes and sustainability programmes increasingly require detailed environmental disclosures, these updated EPDs provide critical information to support informed material selection,” said Justin Koscher, president of PIMA
“Polyiso insulation continues to deliver strong thermal performance while contributing to more energy-efficient buildings.”
