Smart surfaces: Covestro brings color-changing PU interiors to life

Covestro has partnered with Marquardt Group and E Ink to develop polyurethane-based interior surfaces that integrate invisible, responsive display functionality into automotive cabins.

The collaboration, demonstrated in Marquardt’s “Centum” concept car, centres on embedding E Ink’s low-power e-paper displays beneath PU-coated synthetic materials—enabling dynamic, color-changing surfaces without altering the look and feel of premium interior textiles.

At the core of the solution is a transparent film based on Covestro’s waterborne INSQIN PU technology, using Impranil DLC-F as the coating foundation. This enables display elements to remain fully visible while maintaining the tactile and mechanical performance required for automotive interiors, including resistance to abrasion, hydrolysis and corrosive chemicals.

“With The Centum, we wanted to demonstrate how intelligent functions can be integrated into interior surfaces without compromising design or quality,” said Felix Hake, head of innovation at Marquardt. “Working with E Ink and Covestro allowed us to create a material solution that combines a premium tactile experience with responsive visual effects.”

Covestro highlighted the role of polyurethane chemistry in enabling the concept. “This project highlights the versatility of INSQIN PU technology and Impranil DLC-F,” said Dr Torsten Pohl, global head of textile coatings at the company. “By developing a transparent, automotive-grade PU coated synthetic compatible with E Ink displays, we were able to support Marquardt in integrating dynamic functionality into familiar surface materials.”

For E Ink, the project demonstrates new application potential for its display platform in mobility. “Our e-paper display technology is designed to deliver dynamic visual experiences with low power consumption, while maintaining the robustness required for demanding applications,” said Pete Valianatos, senior director at E Ink. “Collaborating with Marquardt and Covestro has enabled us to demonstrate how E Ink displays can be integrated behind coated interior surfaces.”

To see what this responsive functional surface looks like, visit Techtextil 2026, held in Frankfurt between April 21 and 24. A door panel demonstrator will be on display at the Covestro booth C79 in hall 11.0.
