Econic Technologies has presented new data on the use of carbon dioxide-based polyols in flexible polyurethane foams, reporting that the materials can deliver performance comparable with conventional formulations while reducing reliance on fossil-derived feedstocks.
Speaking at the annual Europur conference in Antwerp, Richard Stevenson, business development manager – polyols at Econic, outlined results from studies examining the effect of the company's polycarbonate ether (PCE) polyols on foam structure and properties.
The presentation, entitled Polyurethane Foams from Renewable Carbon – CO₂ Polyols for Flexible Foam, described how captured CO₂ can be incorporated into polyols using Econic's catalyst technology, partially replacing petroleum-derived epoxides.
According to the company, the amount of carbon dioxide incorporated into the polyol can be adjusted while maintaining control over molecular weight and functionality. The process operates under relatively mild conditions and can be retrofitted to existing polyol manufacturing assets.
Data presented at the conference showed that foams produced using PCE polyols achieved properties comparable with conventional materials across a range of densities and with both TDI and MDI systems. The work included conventional slabstock and viscoelastic foam grades using standard additives.
Econic also discussed life cycle assessment work indicating that the use of CO₂-derived polyols could lower the climate impact of polyurethane foams. Previous studies carried out by the company concluded that each tonne of CO₂ incorporated as a raw material can avoid at least three additional tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions elsewhere in the value chain.
The company said its technology allows polyol producers to replace up to 50% of traditional oil-based feedstocks with captured carbon dioxide, creating materials for applications including mattresses, furniture, automotive seating and interior components.
Econic has been expanding the application range of its renewable-carbon polyols in recent years, adding viscoelastic and combustion-modified foam grades and working with commercial partners to scale production.
