Wevo-Chemie has developed a polyurethane potting compound designed to protect highly integrated printed circuit boards used in electric-vehicle battery management systems.
The company said Wevopur 60210 FL T combines electrical insulation, thermal conductivity and mechanical protection with rheological properties intended for automated processing.
Battery management systems monitor and control voltages of up to 800 V in electric vehicles. The increasing number of diagnostic, communications and safety functions built into these systems is resulting in more densely populated circuit boards that must withstand vibration, temperature fluctuations, moisture and high operating temperatures.
Wevo said its compound has a Shore D hardness of 40–50, allowing it to absorb shocks and vibration and accommodate stresses caused by changing temperatures.
A thermal conductivity of 0.8 W/m·K helps distribute heat within the potted assembly and reduce temperature differences between components. According to the company, this can lower the risk of stress cracking and solder joints becoming detached.
The material has a dielectric strength of more than 20 kV/mm and is formulated to protect electronic components against moisture and electrochemical corrosion.
Wevopur 60210 FL T can be applied using a selective “dam-and-fill” process. Its flow behavior and thixotropy allow the same material to form a retaining barrier and fill the enclosed area without leaving air pockets.
Selective potting protects specified areas of a circuit board while leaving connectors and testing points accessible. Layer thickness and material consumption can be adjusted to accommodate different circuit-board geometries.
The compound is compatible with standard two-component mixing and dispensing equipment. Wevo said using one material for both the dam and fill stages can simplify material qualification, storage and process management.
Germany-based Wevo manufactures polyurethane, epoxy and silicone potting compounds, adhesives and sealants for electronics and electrical-engineering applications.
