BASF has secured land at its Dahej site in Gujarat while it conducts an advanced feasibility study into local MDI production.
BASF is evaluating the construction of an MDI production complex in Dahej, India, as it looks to meet growing demand for polyurethane materials in the region.
The German chemicals producer said it was in the advanced stages of a feasibility study and had secured an industrial land parcel through its subsidiary, BASF India Polyurethanes Private Limited.
A final investment decision will depend on the outcome of the study and remains subject to the necessary approvals. BASF has not disclosed the proposed plant’s capacity, investment value or potential construction timetable.
The company already operates an MDI splitter and polyurethane production facilities at its integrated chemical complex in Dahej, in the western state of Gujarat. According to BASF, this existing infrastructure could provide a foundation for further expansion at the site.
BASF said locally produced MDI would enable it to supply customers in India and neighbouring markets more directly. Demand is expected to be supported by continued urbanisation, infrastructure development and growth in Indian manufacturing.
MDI is a principal raw material for rigid and flexible polyurethane products used in building insulation, refrigeration equipment, automotive components, furniture and consumer goods.
The potential Indian project would add to BASF’s international MDI manufacturing network. The company currently produces MDI in Antwerp, Belgium; Geismar, US; Chongqing and Caojing in China; and Yeosu, South Korea.
BASF is also completing a US$1 billion expansion of its MDI operations in Geismar. The project is now entering the final phase of commissioning.
Ramkumar Dhruva, president of BASF’s Monomers division, said an Indian complex would complement the company’s existing production network and improve supply reliability for customers.
BASF has operated in India for more than 130 years. At the end of 2025, the company employed 2,435 people and had eight production sites in the country.
