Arkema targets rigid-foam stability with new HFO additive

Foranext Continuum is intended to maintain the consistency of polyurethane B-side formulations containing Arkema’s Forane 1233zd blowing agent.

Arkema has launched a low-viscosity additive designed to improve the storage stability of rigid polyurethane foam formulations using its Forane FBA 1233zd blowing agent.

The company said Foranext Continuum helps maintain the consistency of the B-side polyol blend over time. It is available globally for insulation, roofing, appliance and other rigid-foam applications.

A polyurethane B-side typically combines polyols with catalysts, surfactants, flame retardants, blowing agents and other additives. Interactions between these components during storage can change the blend’s reactivity and affect processing or finished-foam performance.

The issue has become more prominent as foam manufacturers move from established hydrofluorocarbon blowing agents to low-global-warming-potential alternatives.

Arkema said Foranext Continuum was developed specifically for formulations containing Forane FBA 1233zd. The non-flammable liquid blowing agent is used in polyurethane and polyisocyanurate insulation products, including appliance, panel, roofing and spray foams.

The additive is intended to reduce changes in formulation behaviour during storage and provide more consistent processing throughout the material’s usable life. Arkema did not disclose a recommended dosage, the resulting shelf life or comparative foam-performance data.

“As customers continue to advance their transition to HFO-based technologies, they are looking for solutions that deliver value beyond the blowing agent itself,” said Frédéric Gauvard, group president for fluorogases at Arkema.

“Foranext Continuum additive reflects our commitment to helping customers improve formulation consistency and enhance operational efficiency.”

The launch extends Arkema’s offer around 1233zd following the start-up of a 15,000-tonne/year production unit at Calvert City, Kentucky. Arkema invested nearly US$60 million to convert a former HFC production line at the site to manufacture the lower-GWP blowing agent.

The company said the combination of Forane FBA 1233zd and Foranext Continuum would support customers seeking both lower environmental impact and reliable rigid-foam formulation performance.
